Santuario di Greccio

Greccio (RI)

The hermitage sanctuary of Greccio, also known as the sanctuary of the nativity scene, is a Franciscan sanctuary and hermitage located in the municipality of Greccio (province of Rieti, Lazio), the best known of the four sanctuaries of the Rieti Holy Valley (together with the sanctuary of Fonte Colombo, the sanctuary of the Forest and the sanctuary of Poggio Bustone). Among the most important places of Franciscanism, it was founded by Saint Francis of Assisi and is nicknamed "the Franciscan Bethlehem", because in this place, in 1223, Saint Francis invented the nativity scene. It is part of the path of Francis and the way of Francis.
