Itinerary

Travel back in time to the most powerful city of Magna Graecia, strolling among thousand-year-old temples nestled in baroque facades on the white islet of Ortigia.

Day 1: Ortigia Island and the Cathedral

Morning: Cross the Umbertine Bridge and enter the islet of Ortigia, the ancient heart of the city. Admire the remains of the Temple of Apollo at the entrance and then wander through the alleys until you reach Piazza Duomo. Here, you'll visit a unique cathedral: built by incorporating the columns of the ancient Temple of Athena, still visible inside and out.
Lunch: Stop at the Ortigia Market: colors, sounds, and aromas. Stop at one of the market's delis (the famous Caseificio Borderi) for an epic sandwich made to order with local products.
Afternoon: Descend to the Fonte Aretusa, a freshwater spring just meters from the sea where natural papyrus grows. Continue to the very tip of the island to visit Castello Maniace, a Swabian fortress jutting out into the sea.

Giorno 3: La Giudecca, i Pupi and the sea

Morning: Return to Ortigia and explore the ancient Giudecca (Jewish Quarter). Visit the Jewish Bath (Miqwe), the oldest in Europe, hidden beneath a hotel and rediscovered by chance. Learn about tradition by visiting a workshop or a small museum of Sicilian puppets (pupi siciliani). Day 3: Giudecca, the Pupi, and the Sea.
Lunch: Relax with an almond granita and brioche by the sea, or try swordfish alla ghiotta.
Afternoon: Take a boat tour to explore the sea caves around the island of Ortigia and see the city from the water. Conclude your journey by waiting for sunset on the Lungomare Alfeo, watching the sun dip into the Mediterranean, painting the white stone pink and gold.
