Day 1: The Stars of Galla Placidia and San Vitale

Morning: The tour begins at the most famous complex: the Basilica of San Vitale, with its octagonal layout and mosaics of Emperor Justinian. Next door, enter the small Mausoleum of Galla Placidia: its starry midnight-blue mosaic ceiling inspired Cole Porter's song "Night and Day."
Lunch: You're in Romagna, the home of Italian street food. Stop at a colorfully striped kiosk for a Piadina Romagnola (thicker here than the one in Rimini) with prosciutto crudo and squacquerone (fresh cheese).
Afternoon: Visit the Neonian Baptistery and the Archiepiscopal Museum to see the Chapel of Sant'Andrea. Stroll through the well-kept pedestrian center, where almost everyone gets around by bicycle.
